The Fran Mlinšek Route-Velenje–Šoštanj
Velenje is where the school principal Fran Mlinšek lived and kept his
bees. Through his words and his own example, he inspired many
young people to become beekeepers. He enjoyed sharing his rich
knowledge with other beekeepers at lectures and various seminars.
The beekeepers of Velenje have therefore named their association
after him in gratitude.

Although the main purpose of beekeeping has always been honey production, other benefits that this activity provides to beekeepers are becoming increasingly important, such as the sociological aspect. Many beekeepers feel very much at home in their local associations – almost like being among their own families. They meet friends and other like-minded people, consult with them and exchange experiences, and plan various activities, such as professional lectures, trips, exhibitions, celebrations of the association’s anniversaries, and
much more. They find all of these various activities enriching.

BEEKEEPING POINTS OF INTEREST
* The Čanč Bee Farm in Plešivec. Trip planners can also include other beekeeping-related sites from the Celje area in this program, such as:
*The Laško Beekeepers’ Association,
* The Celje School of Horticulture,
* VITA–MED, the Silvo Posl Bee Farm, Čača Vas near Rogaška Slatina.

HIGHLY RECOMENDED
Velenje: one of the youngest Slovenian towns. Its coal mine has been converted into a state-of-the-art mining museum. A multimedia presentation and a descent into 160-meter deep mineshaft give visitors a clear picture of the history of extracting coal and the miners’ hard work. This unique experience is rounded off by an authentic miner’s lunch and a ride on the mine train;
Zavodnje: the Kavčnik farm is the most important ethnological,
cultural, and historical monument of the Šalek Valley.
