Coniferous forest covers a full two-thirds of Carinthia,
making this
region an excellent foraging ground when there is honeydew on the
trees. Local beekeepers usually do not transport their bees to other
places. The majority are amateur beekeepers with a small number
of bee colonies. Nonetheless, they take part in regular training
and
seminars, and keep up with all the latest developments in apiculture. |

| Carinthia is a diverse region in the foothills of the Kamnik Alps, the
Pohorje Massif, and the Karavanke Mountains, the cradle of mining,
and therefore also one of Slovenia’s oldest industrial regions. Its
abandoned (and a few still active) coal, lead, and zinc
mines, the century-old linden trees standing next to old farms, and
the legend of King Matthias sleeping under Mt. Peca endow the region with a feeling of strength and a special character. |

Slovenj Gradec: the administrative,
economic, and cultural center of Carinthia. The town’s
best-known tourist attractions include the 13th-century
Parish Church of St. Elisabeth with its elaborate Baroque
ornamentation, Rotenturn Castle, and the Soklič Museum. Among
the most attractive works of art in the museum’s collection
are the paintings by Janez Andrej Strauss and numerous Gothic
and Baroque statues created by local masters. You can enjoy a pleasant walk through the neatly laid out town center;
Mežica: an abandoned lead mine converted
into a museum;
Šentanel: an attractive tourism-oriented
village where you can visit the Luka Kramolc Memorial
Room and the farm implement museum. |
