| Peter Pavel Glavar, who was born in Komenda, was a
very important beekeeping figure and so we chose to name
this route after him. A few years ago, the Logar family
started producing high-quality beekeeping equipment in
nearby Šenčur and its good reputation is increasingly spreading
beyond Slovenia’s borders. The queen-mating station in
Kamniška Bistrica is also worth mentioning; due to its ideal
geographic location, it is perfect for rearing pure-line Carniolan queens. |

A town on the river where the mythological Argonauts carried
the Golden Fleece; a town next to the marshes where pile-dwellers
lived; a town with the rich inheritance of the Roman settlement
of Emona; the capital of the Land of Carniola; the capital
of Napoleon’s Illyrian Provinces; a town of Renaissance, Baroque, and especially Secession
buildings, and the largest exhibition of works by the
architect Jože Plečnik – all of this describes Ljubljana.
As a priest, Peter Pavel Glavar spent a lot of time on
agriculture and beekeeping. His reply to the Viennese
government’s proposal to improve beekeeping in the Austro-Hungarian
lands indirectly influenced his compatriot Anton Janša.
He added an interesting note to his review of an article
by the Ljubljana surgeon Anton Humel, which reported that
the queen bee mates outside her home hive: “And with more
than one drone.” With this statement he preceded the rest
of the world by more than two hundred years. |
